HOW TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR RESUME TO LAND MORE INTERVIEWS
EMPLOYERS CARE ABOUT ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN YOUR RESUME
Do you create your resume highlighting your accomplishments?
➟ Accomplishments are extremely powerful because they provide proof of your past successes and abilities and demonstrates how you can help your new employer in specific areas.
➟ You also prove that your past successes and strong performance can be replicated in the future.
➟ When you demonstrate that you helped your last company succeed and grow, your future employer will be delighted to know that you can provide similar results or even better results for them.
➟ Use of metrics is also important because they are more convincing and memorable because they are specific rather than only listing duties and responsibilities on a resume or even in an interview. Say how you improved processes and products, increased sales, decreased expenses.
Examples:
➟ Key metrics are demonstrated by percentages, dollars and numbers
- Percentages: (% increase in sales, % growth you contributed to % decrease in expenses)
- Dollar amounts: (managed $___ advertising budget, $___ project budget, $___ worth of customer accounts)
- Number of people: (trained [x] new employees, interacted with [X] clients or suppliers daily)
AVOID USING ‘RESPONSIBLE FOR’ IN YOUR RESUME. IT'S NOT AN IMPRESSIVE STATEMENT, IT IS TOO GENERIC.
➟If you find the urge to use ‘RESPONSIBLE FOR’, limit its use for writing statement that describe your overall responsibility followed by some key accomplishments.
➟Companies will use responsibility in your Job Description but that does not mean that you follow suit. You do not necessarily fulfill your responsibilities all the time, hence it is not an impressive word to use on your resume
➟Think of your child. He/she has a responsibility to clean his/her room but may not accomplish it.
➟Think of how many times you are responsible to do something and never accomplish it.
BUILD AN 'ACCOMPLISHMENTS FILE'
➟If you are at the Career Change or Job search Stage of your career or journaling your career as a Career Professional, use a notebook and list all your jobs perhaps in the last 10-15 years
➟Accomplishments - For each job (work tasks and duties) that you have done, how do these duties actually help the company?
➟Quantify your job (work tasks and duties) as much as possible (not all job duties can be quantified so don’t become overly anxious if you are not able to quantify some of them).
Two things are demonstrated here:
1. There is no need to say you are a team-oriented person (a statement that many career professionals put in their resume without demonstrating it). You need to demonstrate that you are team oriented, and this is a way to do so.
2. Quantify your achievements by using metrics which prove to be more interesting, impressive, and memorable.
HOW, WHEN, WHERE AND WHAT OF YOUR JOB DUTIES
1. List your main job duties and turn them into accomplishments.
2. Think about where and what you spend most of your time doing.
3. What you were you responsible for
What product or processes you helped the company improve or achieve.
USE THE PAB FRAMEWORK
PROBLEM ACTION RESULTS FRAMEWORK OF CREATING ACCOMPLISHMENTS FILE
Problem you solved - Who did you help?
Action you took - How you helped?
Results - What was the outcome or result? Quantify them
