“TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF”

Tell me about yourself is not a question. It is an engagement conversation. It helps people to get to know you. It is an icebreaker.

In the case of an interview, they are not looking for your personal life story, they are looking for your work story.

This is a conversation you should be prepared for in any interview whether it is Face to Face in person, on the phone, or Face to Camera (remote)

You should also be prepared whether you are interviewing for a real job or if it is an informational interview.

Your story should be a brief history of your Past, Present and Future endeavors.

USE THIS SIMPLE FRAMEWORK – Past Present Future

PAST:

Do not dwell too much in the past. Give a brief story of how your past role or roles relate to the job you are seeking. 

PRESENT:

Give a brief story of how your present or most recent role or role relates to the job you are seeking. 

FUTURE:

Explain how you can use your past and present experiences to solve the future company’s problems.

If this is a prospecting exercise, meaning that you do not have a role to discuss explain what you are looking for in the next role.

What other tools to present?

If it is a prospecting exercise, there in no job description, then present your prospecting resume, the resume targeted to the ROLE. E.g., Are you a Project manager? Send your Project Manager (PM) Resume. 

Do you have a job description? Customize your resume to match the job description, you will have greater and faster success.
