MASTERING THE ART OF THE THANK-YOU NOTE

Nov 30, -0001

Thank-You Notes! Should You Send One or Not?

Sending thank-you notes after an interview is not a strict requirement, but it's generally considered a good practice in the professional world.

When applying for a job, you compete, and because some hiring managers may think it's important, while others may not, so, I advise you to send one.

Here is what we can agree on:

Demonstrates Courtesy and Professionalism

It shows that you're courteous and you value the time interviewers spent with you reflecting well on your professionalism.

Reaffirms Interest

A thank you note is a great way to reiterate your interest in the position and the company. It's an opportunity to show that you're enthusiastic about the role.

Keeps You Memorable

In a pool of candidates, sending a thank you note can help keep you in the minds of the interviewers. It sets you apart as someone who goes the extra mile.

Opportunity for Reinforcement:

You can use the note to reinforce a key point about your qualifications or to briefly mention something you didn't get a chance to discuss in the interview.

Builds Your Network

Even if you don't get the job, a thank-you note leaves a positive impression, which can be beneficial for your professional network in the long run.

Keep these notes professional, brief, and timely (ideally within 24 hours after the interview). Personalize each note if you've been interviewed by multiple people,

and avoid overly aggressive or desperate tones.

Thank you notes are not mandatory but, they are a powerful tool in your job search toolbox. They reflect well on your character and professionalism, potentially

providing an edge in the hiring process.

Here are the Key elements of your thank you Note

Personalization:

Address the interviewer by name and mention the specific position and company.

Expression of Gratitude:

Thank them for their time and the opportunity.

Reference to the Interview:

Briefly mention a memorable part of your conversation to reinforce your interest and show that you were engaged.

Reiteration of Interest and Fit:

Highlight why you are excited about the role and how your skills align with the company's needs.

Availability for Follow-Up:

Indicate your willingness to provide more information or answer further questions.

Professional Closing:

End with a professional sign-off, including your contact information for easy reference.

Remember, the thank you note should be concise, free of typos or grammatical errors, and sent within 24 hours of the interview. This helps ensure that your message is timely and reinforces a positive impression.

Here are the Do’s and Don'ts of writing an effective Thank You Note.

Dos:

  1. Send It Promptly: Ideally, send your thank you note within 24 hours of your interview. This demonstrates promptness and keeps you fresh in the interviewer's mind.
  2. Personalize It: Address the interviewer by name, and if possible, refer to specific topics or discussions you had during the interview. This shows attentiveness and a personalized approach.
  3. Keep It Professional and Positive: Use a professional tone and express positivity about the opportunity and the company.
  4. Reiterate Your Interest and Qualifications: Briefly remind the interviewer of your enthusiasm for the role and how your skills align with the job requirements.
  5. Proofread: Ensure your note is free of typos and grammatical errors. This reflects your attention to detail and professionalism.
  6. Be Concise: Keep your message brief and to the point, respecting the interviewer's time.

Don'ts:

  1. Don't Be Overly Casual: Avoid using slang or overly casual language, as this can come across as unprofessional.
  2. Don't Bring Up Salary or Benefits: The thank you note is not the appropriate place to negotiate or mention salary and benefits.
  3. Don't Appear Desperate: While you want to express enthusiasm, avoid coming off as desperate or overly aggressive.
  4. Don't Include New Information: This is not the time to introduce new qualifications or experiences that were not discussed in the interview. Stick to reinforcing the points already made.
  5. Don't Be Generic: Avoid sending a generic, one-size-fits-all message. Tailor your note to reflect the specific interview experience.
  6. Don't Forget to Check Contact Information: Make sure you have the correct email address and spelling of the interviewer's name.

By following these dos and don'ts, you'll be able to craft a thank you note that leaves a positive, lasting impression on your interviewer.

It's a small but significant step in demonstrating your professionalism and keen interest in the position.
