RESUME CONFUSION UNRAVELLED - WHICH RESUME TO USE?

If you're feeling overwhelmed and confused about the various types of resumes out there, don't worry, you're not alone.

I'm here to help clear up the confusion and give you a better understanding of the different types of resumes.

First and foremost, it's important to understand that your resume is not your job or work history. Your resume is a marketing tool that showcases your skills and experiences in the best possible light to potential employers.

Now, let's dive into the different types of resumes.

The first type is the MASTER RESUME. This is your resume database that includes all the jobs you've ever done. It's a comprehensive list of your work history and serves as the foundation for all other resumes. You must have a resume database. This is a live document that you keep updating throughout your career. Note that you should not put work history as a title in your resume.

Next is the CUSTOM RESUME or prospecting resume. This is a resume rewrite. It is customized to a specific function or job title such as Business Analysis, Project Manager, or Database Developer.

A custom resume highlights your relevant skills and experiences for a particular role and increases your chances of getting noticed by recruiters and hiring managers. When you do not have a job description, you should present your custom resume.

Lastly, we have the TAILORED RESUME or TARGETED RESUME. This is a resume that's targeted to a specific job description. A tailored resume is not a rewrite of your custom resume but rather a modified version that focuses on the requirements of the job you're applying for.

It's essential to understand that tailoring your resume doesn't mean you have to rewrite it entirely.

A tailored resume is not a rewrite of your custom resume but rather a modified version that focuses on the requirements of the job you're applying for.

You should already have a custom resume that you use for prospecting, and a tailored resume is a version that is specific to the job you're applying for.

Each company that creates a job description has a problem to solve so you cannot send the same custom resume that you craft for a specific role, such as Project Manager or Business Analyst to every company that has a job for a Project Manager or Business Analyst position because each company has a different problem to solve.

'Each company that creates a job description has a problem to solve,
they are hiring you to solve a problem, not because you are looking for a job. Demonstrate that you are the person to solve their particular problem'

You should view the job description as a proposal and the resume as a response to that proposal and hence the reason why you need to tailor the resume to respond to each job description.

It's also important to note that if you're spending a substantial amount of time tailoring your resume, there's a high probability you're targeting the wrong role. So, make sure you're applying for jobs that align with your skills and experiences to increase your chances of landing an interview.

If you're constantly spending a substantial amount of time tailoring your resume you may be targeting the wrong role

In conclusion, understanding the different types of resumes is essential for job seekers to stand out in a crowded job market.

Start with a master resume, customize it for specific roles, and tailor it for each job you apply for. Good luck!
