7 WAYS TO GET PROMOTED
#GET PROMOTED
Getting promoted is an exciting occurrence but it is not guaranteed. You stepped up on the next stair in your career, feel a heightened sense of achievement, assume more responsibilities, and make more money. Very exciting indeed! You need to do some work for you to achieve these results.
Promotion takes more than doing a job well and can sometimes take months to build a case around why you need one.
You should plan to have an initial conversation with your manager six to nine months before you want to get promoted.
You need to prove to decision makers and leadership that you are ready and deserving enough to take on more responsibilities. This requires successfully managing your career path, consistently doing your best work demonstrating dedication.
This is not the time to kick back. You need to keep delivering so that you can get your first promotion. To do so you need to be consistent in your delivery and this is not an easy feat.
Addison Group survey found that 40% of millennials expect a promotion every one to two years. From day one you need to produce and start delivering great results. If you have not started it is not too late:
Here are Seven 7 actionable things you can do
1. Be Goal-oriented
Set clear expectations with your manager.
Plan the trajectory of your career by meeting with you manager and set some SMARTR goals for yourself. Let them know that you would like to exceed expectations and find out what you can do to make that happen in their eyes.
Let them know how often you would like to connect for performance reviews, many companies have 6 months reviews, why not ask to shorten it to three months?
If you are a new employee, get to the topic in the first meeting. Let them know of your commitment to delivering great work and find out from then what it would take to get promoted.

2. Deliver beyond your job description
You have already proven your capabilities, so it is time to take on some stretch assignments in areas that you would like to grow. These jobs will allow you to try out for the promotion that you are seeking.
3. Be a Team Player / Be a Collaborator
Employers prefer employees who are committed to helping the greater good of the team, which ultimately benefits the company. They like employees who go above and beyond in helping others so that they can uplift and bring the team along with their success. This allows you to duplicate yourself and allows for promotion. When it appears that you alone can perform certain tasks, that you are irreplaceable, they will keep you in the position to continuously perform those tasks.
If your boss feels like they won’t be able to ever replace you because no one can do what you do, you’ll never leave your position and, consequently, will never move up!
On the other hand, when you teach and mentor your peers, you will be demonstrating your leadership abilities and will be taken seriously for promotions. You are of more value to a company when you can duplicate yourself.
Some employees believe that if they teach others what they know, the company will replace them with a more junior person. In fact, if you need to get your promotion, you need to think differently. When you help others, management will see you as a mentor and promote you so that you can develop the team.
4. Document Your Success and Advocate for Yourself
You need to prove that you deserve a promotion in your discussion with management. They will need to know why you require the promotion.
The best way to achieve this is to build a working portfolio of your accomplishments throughout the year so that you do not have to commit everything to memory.
Keep a record of your achievements – what you do to enhance the bottom line and make product, processes and, or people better.
Quantify the achievements using percentages, numbers, and dollar amounts. Include all the results that are creative and innovative and shows your loyalty and commitment to your department and the company.
5. Behave / Act like a leader - Individuals get Promoted – Not teams
You are a team player and that is desirable, but you also need to stand out among your peers.
If you are working in a group there are things you can do it position yourself. You can take control of the project by volunteering to make the final presentation to the team or make the presentation to your CEO.
6. Ask for the Promotion – If you don’t ask you don’t get.
Do not expect your manager to read your mind. If you want a promotion, ask for it.
7. Find your promotion somewhere else
Be realistic. There may be many reasons why the promotion is not possible at your current workplace because of circumstances outside your control such as wage freeze, no more categories for promotional capabilities, the staff is young and there are no promotional opportunities opening soon. If this is your position, you should look outside of your organization for your promotion.
Oftentimes, it is easier to get the salary bump you desire at a new job than at the one you currently hold. Some new jobs come with new titles, higher salaries and with signing bonuses, more responsibilities and leadership roles that come with a promotion.
